Tuesday, 30 Apr 2024

2021 marked a historic year for St Brendan’s College rugby league as the 1st XIII team clinched the prestigious Aaron Payne Cup title for the first time in eight years.

In a thrilling final, St Brendan’s emerged victorious with a nail-biting 19-18 win against Kirwan State High School, sealed by Owen Pattie's last-second field goal.

The legacy of the St Brendan's College rugby league program continues to provide pathways for its former players to achieve higher honours. Coby Williamson (2020) and Matthew Hill (2022) of the Melbourne Storm, Owen Pattie (2021) and Tane Kiriona (2021) of the Canberra Raiders, and Blayden Dodd (2021) of the Redcliffe Dolphins, are shining examples of the strong foundation received during their time at SBC.

Fast forward three years, and the question arises: where are they now? Four key players from that monumental victory continue to make waves in the rugby league arena.

Matthew Hill, now sporting the Melbourne Storm colors, continues to dazzle audiences with his remarkable skills, leaving an indelible mark on the field. Meanwhile, Owen Pattie and Tane Kiriona, representing the Canberra Raiders, stand as stalwarts for their team, their dedication unwavering since their days at St Brendan’s.

Last weekend, the past and present collided as three of these extraordinary individuals faced off in a Jersey Flegg battle in Melbourne. Tane Kiriona and Owen Pattie, donning the green of the Raiders, emerged victorious against Matt Hill's Melbourne Storm side. Despite the outcome, Hill’s performance, marked by two remarkable tries, epitomized the enduring SBC spirit among former teammates.

The recent collision between the Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders quartet in a Jersey Flegg battle saw Canberra securing a hard-fought eight-point win against the favored Melbourne Storm side. Despite the outcome, Hill’s performance brought smiles all around. Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Blayden Dodd made his debut for the Redcliffe Dolphins Qld Cup side, securing a decisive victory over the PNG Kumuls.

As the journey of these remarkable individuals unfolds, one thing remains certain - the echoes of their SBC teammates cheering ‘Nulla Nulla Boomerang’ continue to propel them towards greater heights, both on and off the field.
