Cattle Club is the gateway for Young Paraders to enter the competition circuit at our local regional shows. It provides students with an interest in cattle the opportunity to judge, show, and present cattle and also develop lifelong skills while building their confidence and providing networking opportunities with leaders in the agriculture industry.
OVERVIEW
St Brendan’s College is using a mixture of Red Brahman and Droughtmaster genetics to provide homebred show steers. The balance of the show team is purchased or donated cattle.
Cattle Club is open to students in all year levels and students are required to wear the required uniform.
Cattle Club runs from the Ag Shed, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.15 pm to 5.00 pm.
Students travel to various agricultural shows each year to show cattle. Some shows require students to camp overnight so they will require a swag or sleeping bag. There will be a small additional charge for transport to and from shows.
Students are trained in all aspects of cattle showing including breaking in cattle, halter training, and leading and presenting cattle for judging. Students learn what the judges are looking for when judging cattle and will participate in Junior Parader competitions at shows as well as leading led steers and stud cattle. We further encourage students to learn and participate in Junior Judging.
CATTLE HANDLING AND TRAINING
Students must attend training afternoons at the school. For workplace health and safety reasons, students must wear closed-in footwear at all times while in the yards. Training will commence in Term 1 and continue throughout the year. Students may also be invited to attend training sessions at cattle stations or at local workshops at various times.
CATTLE CLUB FEES
Students are required to pay an annual fee to the SBC administration office. Fees may be added to student accounts if parental permission is given. This fee includes two cattle club shirts. Continuing cattle club members who currently have a beige cattle club shirt will receive a discount on the fee.
The annual Cattle Club membership fee pays for the following:
- Bus/car transport to and from all agricultural shows listed in the show schedule;
- All meals at agricultural shows including overnight camping;
- Entry to all agricultural shows including associated cattle nomination fees (e.g. Junior Parader fees).
- Students may be required to purchase their meals or pay a small nominal fee for group-prepared meals. Please note, that not all shows provide ATM facilities.
UNIFORM
The Cattle Club uniform is a beige, long-sleeved shirt for travel and preparation days, a green check long-sleeve shirt, school tie or necktie (ladies), a western hat, cream, and blue jeans and boots. As students are representing the school, the uniform must be worn during all show events. When not showing cattle, students are required to wear a school polo shirt. No other clothing should be worn at shows. Unfortunately, students not wearing the correct attire will not be permitted to represent the College at show events.
